Public Works <br /> Administration <br /> City of Eugene <br /> 858 Pearl Street <br /> May 2, 199 Eugene, OR 97401 <br /> (503) 687-5262 <br /> CONTACT: Chuck Solin, Environmental Program Manager, 687-5061 <br /> Louis Kroeck, Project Manager, 465-2692 <br /> From Sandr Gleason, Public Communication Manager, 6$7-5523 <br /> FOR IMM DIATE RELEASE <br /> CITY TO BEGIN WORK ON TUGMAN PARK LANDFILL <br /> Rep esentatives from the City of Eugene and the Oregon Department of Environmental <br /> Quality (D Q) recently agreed upon construction activities and a construction schedule to <br /> correct site onditions in the undeveloped section at the south end of Tugman Park to the <br /> south of th playground area. The construction work will correct problems that have resulted <br /> from a lan ill that operated at the site between the 1920 and 1950s. Once the work is <br /> i <br /> completed, ngoing testing will help the City assess the effectiveness of the work. <br /> Ove the next few months, the City of Eugene Public Works Department will acquire <br /> all needed nvironmental permits. The project will be bid and a contractor selected by mid- <br /> June 1995, with construction planned to begin mid-July 1995. Construction will be completed <br /> ~ by early N vember 1995. <br /> r <br /> Dur ng the construction, the contractor will cover the north face of the old dump site <br /> j where som debris has been exposed due to erosion. Nearly 13,000 cubic yards of soil will <br /> be hauled the site. The steep areas will be contoured to a surface grade that provides <br /> appropriat drainage and minimizes slope erosion. <br /> Ab ut 400 feet of Tugman Creek will be piped, sealed, and covered by the landfill <br /> cover. Thi will prevent infiltration of water from the old dump site into Tugman Creek and <br /> will lessen the possibility of contaminants migrating into the creek.
