I
Public Works
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
Eugene, Oregon 974Q1
N E W S R E L E A S E (503) 687-5262
AUGUST lb, 1993
CONTACT: Louis Kroeck, Project Manager, 465-2692
From Public Information Section, 687-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BIKE PATH IN WEST ALTON BAKER PARK TO BE RELOCATED
A section of the riverside bicycle path through the western portion of
Alton Baker Park will be relocated to increase visibility and improve safety
for people who use the path. Work on the project is scheduled to begin this
week.
Cope Construction, under contract to the City of Eugene, will construct
approximately 1,800 feet of 12-foot-wide concrete bike path in a new
alignment that moves the path slightly away from the river and avoids the
sharp turns and dips that present safety hazards to bicyclists, pedestrians,
and other users of the popular pathway. The new alignment also meets the
goals of the development plan for the west end of Alton Baker Park by
increasing the riparian zone next to the river. The new path will be wider
and will!be constructed of a more durable material than the existing
9-foot-wide asphalt path.
Bicycle and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project.

The work'iis expected to take about a month to complete. The $57,000
construc i'n cost will be paid for through a combination of general, urban
transition, and bicycle path funds. ,
I
