News Releas Annual Leaf Pickup
October 14, 994
Page 3
Prope y owners also are responsible for keeping their sidewalks free of leaves. Wet
leaves on si ewalks are slippery and hazardous for pedestrians.
Zucke offered the following suggestions for placing leaves safely in the street. Pile
leaves on th street surface near the gutter, keeping the gutter and catch basins free of
leaves. Wi drove the leaves so they do not obstruct the flow of water along the curb. On
streets with ut curbs and gutters, pile the leaves near the street surface, away from ditches.
Stack the le ves so they don't block bike and traffic lanes or create hazardous situations for
bicyclists a d motorists. Only pile leaves in a bike lane when there is no other alternative,
such as hau ing the leaves to the City's stockpile site, or placing them on a side street. If
there is no lternative but to place leaves in bike lanes, keep at least half the lane's width
open for bi ycles.
The c'ty will keep a stockpile of leaves at the overflow parking lot at Alton Baker
Park on the east side of Day Island Road. This is the same site used last year, and signs
will be pos ed to help people locate the correct parking lot.
Leav s at the stockpile site are available to citizens for composting. Residents also
may dump eaves on the stockpile if they do not want to wait for the scheduled pickup in
! their area. Only leaves may be dumped at the stockpile. The stockpile site opened on Oct.
8 and will emain open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Sunday, Jan. 8, 1995.

~r
