On larger jobs, such as slurry seals and overlays, the work is done by <br /> contractor hired by the City. <br /> Th type of preventive maintenance selected for each street is based on the condition <br /> of the roa way. Preventive maintenance is acost-effective way to improve driving surfaces <br /> and extend the life of streets. The most expensive technique is to completely replace a <br /> roadway t at has failed prematurely due to inadequate funding for preventive maintenance <br /> programs. <br /> Co tracts totaling approximately $575,000 have been awarded to repair streets in <br /> I <br /> several nei hborhoods. Most of the work is scheduled to be done in July, August, and <br /> I <br /> September The work consists of either asphalt overlays or slurry sealing, which is a thin <br /> coat of as halt emulsion applied to the existing street surface to seal cracks.
