I, Public Works
I City of Eugene

~M' 858 Pearl Street
November 8, 1994 Eugene, Oregon 97401
(503) 687-5262
To: Dan Spice, KUGN
From: Eric Jones, City of Eugene Public Works Department
Subject: Nomination for Soaring Eagle award
On Septem er 30, 1994, an elderly gentleman had a heart attack in the terminal building at
the Eugene Airport. Another person in the area, who is a nursing student, began
cardiopul nary resuscitation (CPR), and 9-1-1 was called. Moments later, Don Lancaster,
36, an Ai ort employee for the past eight years, arrived and began doing chest compressions
while the rsing student did the breathing. At this time, the patient had no pulse. The
emergency medical crew from the Eugene fire station at the Airport arrived soon afterward,
and Don c ntinued doing chest compressions while the EMTs administered heart shocks and
oxygen an started an IV. Finally, a regular pulse was established, and the patient was taken
to Sacred eart General Hospital. The man is now under his doctor's care, at home in
'~i Florida, w ich is where he was headed when the heart attack occurred.
I
For his qu' k-thinking action, his persistence, his skill, and his care for this passenger who
~ ~I could have died without his help, I nominate Don Lancaster for the KUGN Soaring Eagle
award. T nursing student was not identified. Perhaps KUGN could ask this unsung hero
to come fo ward and be recognized as well for his care and compassion.
I~, If you hav any questions, please give me a call at 465-2712.
I~
I
III ~ t~ ~8
