~
PUBLIC WO S DEPARTMENT • 858 PEARL • EUGENE, OREGON 97401
NEWS RELEASE
February 2 1990
CONTACT: ob Hammitt, Maintenance Director, 687-5220
ene Shutt, Maintenance Manager, 687-5220
From Sandr Gleason, Public Information, 687-5523
~I' FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE
CITY URG S CAUTION WHEN DRIVING OR WALKING ON SANDED STREETS AND SIDEWALKS
Durin the recent ice and snow storms, crews from the city of Eugene
Public Wor s Department spread nearly 100 dump truck loads of sand on area
streets to help motorists move more safely around the city. Now the storm
has passed the sand poses a potential hazard, and residents are urged to use
caution wh n walking, driving, or bicycling on sanded roads, sidewalks, or
crosswalks until maintenance crews have removed the sand. Clean up will
begin this week and is expected to take about three weeks to complete.
Accor ing to Bob Hammitt, city maintenance director, traffic has thrown
much of th sand that was spread on the roads onto adjacent sidewalks, bike
paths, and crosswalks. "Bike lanes and sidewalks along arterials and on
I'~, hilly stye is will probably present the greatest hazard, since we
concentrat d our efforts in those areas during the storms," Hammitt said. He
also cauti ned motorists about driving too fast in areas where the sand has
not worn o f, as stopping distances will likely be reduced.
The s nd is collected using street sweepers and is stockpiled for use on
future cit maintenance projects.
i
' i
i
i
