PROTECTED/PERMI5SIVE LEFT TURN SIGNAL
NEW SIGNAL LOCATION
On Willake zie Road at the Coburg/Willakenzie intersection. Only the east
9 and west b and traffic on Willakenzie Road will be affected. The signal for
north and outh bound traffic on Coburg Road will have the standard protected
left turn ignal installed. Other protected/permissive left turn signals
will be in tailed at designated locations in the future.
WHEN WILL HE SIGNAL BE TURNED ON
On Friday, May 10, at about 9 a.m., staff from the Transportation Division of
the City o Eugene Public Works Department will switch on the new protect-
ed/permissive left turn signal at the Coburg and Willakenzie intersection.
~ WHY ARE WE INSTALLING THE NEW SIGNAL HEADS
The new sig al features will allow the City of Eugene to minimize motorists
1 delays at t affic signals, decrease vehicle emissions that create air pollu-
tion, and i crease the number of vehicles able to move through an intersec-
tion. This type of signal is now used extensively in other parts of the
United Stat s, including California, Washington, and the east coast.

1
ARROW DEFIN TIONS
j Typical sig al heads in Eugene have three stacked lights, and in some case,
signal ligh s also have protected green arrows for left hand turns. These
;new traffic signals have two additional lights: a green "left turn" arrow
and a yello "caution" arrow. What's different with the signal is that the
left turn t affic will have a protected left turn whenever the green arrow is
~ on, even if it is accompanied by a red light.
Green Arrow: When a steady green arrow is displayed (shown alone or with
snot er ig t), oncoming traffic is stopped and a vehicle can make a protect-
ed left tur When the green arrow goes out, the yellow arrow will switch
on, indicati g the protected left turn is over.
Yellow Arro A steady yellow arrow should be treated as a typical yellow
~signa whic means the signal is about to change and motorists should use
caution. Mo orists should not enter the intersection unless they are too far
into the int rsection to stop safely.
Solid Green i nal: A solid green signal means the same thing it has always
meant: moto fists wanting to make a left hand turn must yield to oncoming
traffic or p destrians in the crosswalk. The key thing to remember is that
unless the g een arrow is displayed, a driver should treat these signal dis-
plays as a t pical movement where the left turn motorist must yield to oncom-
ing traffic nd pedestrians.
FOR MORE INF RMATION
,John Emmons, Traffic Systems Supervisor, 687-5128
Brant Willia s, Traffic Engineer, 687-5218
i
;y
{
