Working w'th the local Rain Bird vendor, United Pipe Supply, the City has
arranged or one year's free use of a computerized irrigation control program
called "M xicom." During the trial period, Parks Maintenance has installed
the progr m's hardware in the Washington/Jefferson Park. The hardware
interface with a weather station, which enables the computerized system to
adjust it igation run times to supply only the amount of water actually lost
through a apo-transpiration. Sprinklers will not operate if there has been
enough ra n. Maxicom eliminates waste and saves on water costs and staff
time by f Being staff from having to visit each controller to make
adjustmen s. If the trial test is positive, Parks Maintenance will purchase
the softw re to install the system in other large, high-use parks.
Leaf Remo al Mechanized
Removing easonal leaf accumulations from turfgrass has been a labor
intensive operation that has been done primarily with backpack, push blowers,
and hand tools. Parks Maintenance staff was able to improve efficiency and
free staff for other jobs by purchasing blower attachments that mount on
small, riding mowers and powered vacuum loaders. It now requires only three
people to remove leaves from the turfgrass in City parks.
