M
News Release Olive Street Reopens to Traffic
September 11, 1992
Page 2
Construction to reopen the two-block section of Olive began in late June
after the change was approved by voters in the May 19th election. The newly
reconstructed street has two 14-foot traffic and bicycle lanes, 14 short-term
parallel parking bays, and wide sidewalk areas for pedestrians. Intersection
sidewalks have brick accents, and 12 three-globe street lights similar to
those on West Broadway are being installed. Later this fall, 25 new street
trees will be planted.
Eugene Sand and Gravel was general contractor for the reconstruction
project. "They completed the work in a timely manner and on budget, with
very little disruption to downtown routines, said Doug Weber, the project
manager or the street reconstruction. "This is a real accomplishment when
you consider the pressure that was on the contractor to be done before the
Eugene Celebration."
The street will be reclosed after the ribbon cutting ceremony to prepare
for the Eugene Celebration and to finish installing the traffic signals. The
street has been designed to permit closure for community events.
As a companion project, a portion of Olive Street between 5th and 8th
avenues was recently converted to accommodate two-way traffic. The
conversion and the reopening will allow a two-way flow of both vehicles and
bicycles hrough the downtown area between 5th and 13th avenues.
