f
Public Works
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
N E W S R E L E A S E Eugene, Oregon 97401
(503) 687-5262
February 6 1992
CONTACT: oe Hessler, Traffic Technician, 687-5285
From Sandr Gleason, Public Information, 687-5523
FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE
SPEED LIMITS CHANGED ON RIVER ROAD
The c ty of Eugene is planning to change the speed limit on a three-mile
section of River Road. On Wednesday morning, February 12, public works crews
will insta 1 new speed limit signs on River Road. The speed limit will be
changed fr m 30 to 40 miles per hour between Holeman Avenue and Hunsaker
Lane. The recently completed widening of River Road has improved traffic
flow and s reet safety, allowing the new speed limits.
When he River Road widening project was completed last fall, the city
of Eugene asked the State Speed Control Board (SSCB) to review the speed
limits on the improved section of road and establish appropriate speed zones.
As part o its review, the board considered the increased width, new street
surface, improved sight distance, and driving speeds. In late January, the
board app oved the request and issued an order authorizing the new speed
limits.
The SCB is a five-member board established by the governor to evaluate
and estab ish appropriate speed zones throughout the state. The board
includes ne representative each from the State Police Department and from
the Orego Department of Transportation and three citizens who are appointed
by the go ernor. _
