Scheduling sweeping of the arterials during the night
shift hel s us avoid conflicts between sweepers and bicyclists and allows us
to clean he paths weekly.
The downt wn core and arterials are swept weekly and residential streets
monthly, epending on weather conditions, equipment breakdowns, and operator
availabil'ty. To keep the sweepers on the street as much as possible, Fleet
staff mai tain and repair the sweepers during the swing shift.

~j Chan es t Swee in Routes
Redesigning the routing process was the first major change. Originally, a
sweeper as assigned to a general area of the city, a 20-square-block section
for exam le. Operators had no guidelines or sweeping pattern, but proceeded
accordin to their best judgment. It was difficult to change operators,
because hey would not know where previous operators had started or ended.
This mad it difficult to ensure all the streets in each area were swept.
The rout s are now itemized by street name and by sweeping pattern.
Operator are assigned a route rather than an area, and they work from a
routing heet that systematically covers all streets in a given area. The
routing heets are organized by page and each street is numbered. The page
