E gene voters completed the funding package by approving $5.83 <br /> million in general obligation bonds last March. In addition, the City is <br /> I <br /> allocating $1.1 million from contingency and other funds. Rather than levy <br /> <br /> j a propert tax to repay the general obligation bonds, the City Council <br /> <br /> ~ has adopt d an ordinance requiring the debt service to be paid from the City's <br /> capital p ojects fund or from other sources including future profit from <br /> airport o erations. <br /> Land ide facilites will be constructed this summer. The expanded parking <br /> area, cov red walkway, new entry and exit roads, signs, rental car facilities, <br /> and most f the landscaping will be done by October 15. Expansion of the <br /> terminal ill begin this winter. <br /> The 3.3 million contract for the landside work was awarded to <br /> Wildish C rvallis Construction Company, a local contractor who was low <br /> bidder. 11 eight subcontractors working with Wildish on the project are <br /> from Lane County. The local project architect is Bob Mention of Mention, <br /> <br /> i <br /> Harms, He lesvig, working in conjunction with TRA in Seattle. <br /> Up t 150 construction workers are expected to work on the project <br /> this summ r alone. About 40 permanent jobs, primarily among the private <br /> businesse at the airport, are expected to result from the expansion project. <br /> The tate's second largest airport, Mahlon Sweet Airport serves about <br /> ~ 23% of Or gon's population. Last year, passenger ridership set a new <br /> record wi h over half a million arrivals and departures. Air cargo has <br /> also steadily increased.
