<br /> f Y <br /> ' June 15, 1 87 <br /> NEWS RELEA E <br /> From Barba a Bellamy, Public Information Director <br /> City Manag is Office, 687-5010 <br /> FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE <br /> CELEBRATION MARKS BEGINNING OF AIRPORT EXPANSION <br /> Eugen Oregon--Eugeneans today celebrated the beginning of a two-year, <br /> $18.3 million construction project that will more than triple the size of <br /> ~I <br /> Mahlon Swe t Airport terminal, expand airport parking, and add other <br /> improvements. <br /> The xpanded terminal will offer a spacious lobby, a second-story <br /> i <br /> concourse to a larger boarding area, enclosed passenger loading bridges, <br /> i <br /> a mechani ed baggage delivery system, an observation deck, meeting room, and <br /> i more spac for the airlines, restaurant, gift shop, car rental agencies, and <br /> i <br /> other air ort businesses. The project also includes an expanded parking lot <br /> with a co ered walkway, new entry and exit roads, and landscaping. <br /> 'i Cons ruction actually began June 2 with preparation of a temporary <br /> parking a ea that will be used this summer while the permanent parking area <br /> is expand d. Today, a groundbreaking celebration formally marked the <br /> beginning of the expansion project which will be completed in September 1989. <br /> Eugene Ma or Brian B. Obie, City Councilor Roger Rutan, and city Airport <br /> I, Commissio chair Louise Wicks addressed the audience that gathered for the <br /> morning c lebration. <br /> ~ The ayor introduced the slogan "Oh, how Mahlon Sweet it will be", <br /> which wil be used on signs at the construction project and in information <br /> material s about the project.
