NEWS RELEASE
December 1986
CONTACT: Bob Hammitt, Maintenance Superintendent, 687-5220
Sandra Gleason, Information Coordinator, 687-5523
FOR IMMED ATE RELEASE
CITY CHANGES CULVERT MAINTENANCE POLICY
On 0 tober 1, 1986, responsibility for maintaining driveway culverts or
private c lverts within the public right-of-way was returned to city property
owners. ccording to Eugene City Code, culvert maintenance has always been

~ the respo sibility of adjacent property owners. However, for many years
Public Wo ks crews have taken care of the problems rather than enforce the
code.
Acco ding to Maintenance Supervisor Bob Hammitt, returning culvert
maintenan a to the property owner will allow a more efficient scheduling
i
of crews uring the busy fall maintenance season and will help to reduce
maintenan a costs. "Although we have taken care of culverts in the past,
under cit code, property owners are responsible for their maintenance. It
was a logical place for us to cut back and reallocate funds."
Unde the new policy, when a problem is reported or observed, Public
Works will notify the property owner and describe the needed repair, giving
them 20 d s to fix the problem. "If the property owner doesn't take care of
the proble said Hammitt, "we will make the necessary repairs, then bill the
property o ner for the work."
more
