Robert Shelby, who
I
t served as viation Director since 1972, will continue to oversee operations
at Mahlon weet Field.
Gleas n said the consolidation will facilitate management of the two-year
airport co struction project that was approved by voters last month and will
make the t ansition to a larger airport operation easier.
"Ther is already substantial overlap in Public Works and Airport
E~ operations Public Works staff handle the pavement and concrete work
for airpor roads and runways, maintain the airport sewer system, perform
engineerin design for airport improvements and manage the construction
j contracts r the airport, including the $18.3 million airport expansion
i
j project," leason said. "Consolidation of the two departments offers an
I
opportunity to make maximum use of City resources and gain efficiencies in
a number of areas, particularly maintenance. The landside work of the
expansion p oject will be completed this fall, and we wi11 need to increase
J our mainten nce staff to care for the larger parking, road and landscaped
areas. By erging airport and public works maintenance crews and equipment,
we'll be able to stretch our resources and minimize cost increases. Our
-more-
l
