N E W S R E L E A S E <br /> I <br /> i <br /> <br /> ~ January 1 1988 <br /> <br /> i <br /> CONTACT: Les Lyle, City Engineer, 687-5243 <br /> Kathy Rapp, Engineering Office Manager, 687-5504 <br /> Sandra Gleason, Public Information, 687-5523 <br /> <br /> i <br /> FOR IMMED ATE RELEASE <br /> <br /> i <br /> CHIEF CITY SURVEYOR RETIRES AFTER 30 YEARS WITH CITY <br /> Afte more than 30 years with the Eugene Public Works Engineering <br /> division, Mel Marcum, chief city surveyor, will retire on January 29. <br /> Acco ding to Les Lyle, city engineering, Marcum joined the city of Eugene <br /> in Novemb r, 1957, as a civil engineer in design and drafting. By the fall of <br /> 1961, he ad received his professional land surveyor license and had become <br /> chief cit surveyor. "Mel was responsible for many changes in the division," <br /> Lyle said "He developed the benchmark and Oregon coordinate systems, was <br /> instrumen al in developing the first computer system used by Engineering, and <br /> he helped develop our new, state-of-the-art survey system." <br /> <br /> i <br /> A re irement party is planned for January 28, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the <br /> ' Jacobs Ro m at the Hult Center.
