Contract 2006-00228
Exhibit "8"
UNIVERSITY OF QRFGt~IV
December 8, 2005
TO: Matt Rodrigues, Civil Engineer
City ofEugene-Engineering
FR: Tom Connolly
RE: Exploratory Archaeological Survey of the Chad Drive Extension for the City of Eugene
The City of Eugene is developing the Chad Drive Extension modernization project in north Eugene, with
funding from both federal and local sources. The federal funding component requires that an azchaeological
evaluation of the project impact azea be conducted. The project proposes to extend what is now the eastern tenminus
of Chad Drive to intersect with Game Farm Road by diverting Chad Drive northerly along the Old Coburg Road
comdor then northeasterly to Game Farm Road (Figure 1). This project length is ca. 1750 feet (ca. 530 m).
Additional project elements will be the construction of T-intersections to provide access to remaining segments of
Old Coburg Road
Because vegetation limits ground visibility throughout the project corridor, the inventory survey will use
exploratory probes, consisting of 30x30 cm shovel tests. Along existing roadway segments (Old Coburg Road),
probes will be placed at maximum 30 m intervals along the both sides of. the corridor, in a pattern that staggers
probes from one side to the other. Along new.corridor segments (Chad Drive to Old Coburg Road connection; Old
Coburg Road to Game Farm Road connection), a single line of probes at maximum 20 m intervals will be dug on the
corridor alignment. It is estimated that up to 35 total probes will be dug; all excavated fill will be screened over lJ8"
mesh screen to aid in the recovery of cultural items. This effort is considered to be a site discovery procedure only; -
if formal evaluation of identified yultural sites is pursued, it will be under a separate proposal and pernut.
MUSEUM OF NATURAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY
& State Museum of Anthropology • 1224 University of Oregon • Eugene OR 97403-1224
Collections (541) 346-5120 • Research Office (541)346-3031 • Fax (541) 346-5122

An equal vyporfunity, aJfismatlvr acFon institution committed to cu[tura! diversity and rornplianre with Na Amrricans with Disabilities Ad
