SCOPE OF WORK
1_0 Environmental Assessment
The environmental assessment will include collection of soil and groundwater samples from
locations both outside and within the footprint of the fill area as well as a methane barhole survey.
Push probe sampling techniques area proposed for areas outside the fill area. Given the possibility
of encountering fill materials which would preclude use of push probe sampling techniques, it is
proposed that soil and groundwater sampling within the footprint of the fill area be performed using
hollow stem auger drilling methods as part of the geotechnical investigation.
Five (5) push probes will be completed outside the footprint of the fill area to depths of
approximately 20 feet or refusal. One {1) push probe will be completed near the mid-point of the
east and south sides of the former aggregate pit. Based on regional groundwater flow to the west-
narthwest, two (2) push probes will be completed at the approximately mid-point of the north and
west sides of the fill area and one push probe will completed near the northwest comer of the fill
area. The primary purpose of the push probes is to allow for collection of groundwater samples.
Up to frve (5) additional angered soil borings will be completed within the footprint of the fill area as
part of a geotechnical investigation. Materials obtained from these borings will also be inspected
and screened as part of the environmental assessment.
A methane survey will also be conducted at 10 or more locations within and surrounding the fill area.
Prior to installation of the push probes or angered borings, B68A will mark the proposed push probe
locations and request a utility check for identifying buried utilities within the investigation area.
BB&A will also consult with on-site personnel knowledgeable of on-site utilities and subsurface
obstructions prior to subsurface exploration.
1_1 Soil Sampling
For push probe soil samping, soil samples will be retrieved using "macro-core° sample collection
equipment, a type of sample collection tooling which allows for retrieval of continuous cores of
subsurface materials in plastic liners approximately four {4) feet long by one (1) inch in diameter or
five (5}feet long by 1.6 inches in diameter, advanced with a Model 5400 or Model 6600 Geoprobe®.
No additional soil materials are generated by this technology (i.e., all soils are contained within the
soil liners). For the angered soil borings, soil samples will be obtained from split-spoon samplers.
Subsurface materials encountered during completion of the push probes will be recorded on a probe
log. Soil materials in the macro core liners will be inspected for the presence of contamination by
visual inspection and field instrument monitoring using a photoionization detector. The nature of the
soil materials will be logged during probing/drifting to document the geologic unit(s) present and
other observable features.
COE481SC.OSW -PROPOSAL PAGE 2
FIELO INVESTIGATIVE SERVICES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOTECHNICAL ASSESSMENT OF FORMER GRAVEL EXTRACTION SITE

AUGUST 24, 2007
