volunteers together again. Several businesses donated materials and funding, enabling crews of volunteers and parks
staff to build the storage facility and over 1,000 linear feet of walkways and clean-up the playground, tree wells and picnic
areas.
"Working with the Trainsong Neighbors group to improve their park has been a very rewarding experience," says Parks
Planner Carolyn Weiss. "The neighborhood and the larger community stepped up to help make park improvements that
neighborhood kids will enjoy for years." For more information about this project, contact Weiss at 682-4914.
Airport Pilot Project Assists Corporate Aircraft During Foggy Conditions
The first annual low-visibility operations briefing for Eugene-based corporate aircraft operators was conducted by airport
staff in mid-October. Participation in the briefing allows corporate aircraft operators to taxi their aircraft on ramps and
taxiways during foggy conditions when FAA tower personnel are unable to maintain visual contact with the aircraft.
Operators who do not attend this training are required to follow an airport escort vehicle to the runway during low-visibility
conditions.
Six airports in the northwest have FAA-approved low-visibility plans, and Eugene's corporate aircraft operator briefing
program has been designated by the FAA as a pilot project. For more information, contact Airport Operations Supervisor
Mike Coontz, at 682-5044.
New Equipment, Training Can Help Staff Respond to Cardiac Arrest at Eugene Airport
The Eugene Airport continues to investigate ways to provide a safe, comfortable traveling experience for passengers and
their families and friends. Most recently, improvements in the terminal included the installation of two automated external
defibrillators (AEDS), one in the lobby and one in the A gate area. Staff has been trained in the correct protocol for use of
this equipment.
It is estimated that nearly 1,000 Americans die every day from sudden cardiac death, and medical organizations believe
that about a quarter of these deaths could be avoided by providing treatment with an AED during the first few minutes of a
cardiac arrest. While these units are not currently mandatory, Eugene is proud to join the list of airports that have
installed this life-saving equipment. For more information, contact Airport Office Supervisor Diana Bell, at 682-8351.
55th Anniversary of the Declaration of International Human Rights Celebration
The Eugene Human Rights Commission, the Lane County Human Rights Advisory Committee and City of Springfield
invite you to join them on Wednesday, December 10, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Serbu Juvenile Justice Center, 2727 Martin
Luther King, Jr. Blvd., for an event celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the Declaration of International Human Rights.
Awards will be presented by the Eugene Human Rights Commission, the Lane County Human Rights Advisory
Committee and the City of Springfield to city and county employees or work groups that have demonstrated a
commitment to human rights and worked to make this community more inclusive, just, and supportive for diversity. The
recipient for the City of Eugene is Melissa Pearson, who is retiring after 15 years with Human Resources. Lane County's
recipient is Deputy Jay L. Standard, and the City of Springfield's recipient is Chief Jerry Smith. The awards will be
presented by Eugene Human Rights Commission Chair Sara Rich, Lane County Commissioner Bobby Green and
Springfield City Manager Mike Kelly.
