at 9:30 a.m. to enjoy pastries, coffee and juice courtesy of the Eugene City Bakery and the Friends of Hendricks Park
tebefore heading to the forest and trails. The last two volunteer work parties this winter are scheduled on January 10 and
February 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, contact Ginny Alfriend, Hendricks Park gardener, at
682-5324 or Friends of Hendricks Park at 607-4066 or www.friendsofhendrickspark.org.
Train Station Switches to Temporary Office as Work Begins on Depot
To accommodate the start of rehabilitation work on the historic Eugene Depot, Amtrak on Wednesday moved its ticketing,
passenger service and baggage operations to a temporary facility next to the train station at 433 Willamette Street.
Site preparation work began in October on a $1.3 million contract to rehabilitate the 1908 rail passenger depot. General
Contractor, Morris P. Kielty, moved in several modular buildings to house Amtrak while the depot is being renovated. The
"bunkhouse," a small structure built in the late 19th century, was moved to the southwest side of the station lot acquired by
the City last summer. Eventually, the bunkhouse will be refitted as a train crew support facility and moved to a more
permanent location at the northwest corner of the depot site.
When the depot reopens in the fall of 2004, it will function better as a modern facility, meeting a variety of transportation
needs while honoring the area's architectural and civic heritage. The new depot will include accessible restrooms, a larger
public lobby with new but historically accurate lighting and benches, an energy-efficient heating and cooling system, and
improved Amtrak staff work spaces. Limited onsite parking will be available while the depot is under construction. For
more information, contact Russ Mecredy, project manager for the Facility Management Division, at 682-6024.
i
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2
December 11,2003
