When the soil is wet it's easier for volunteers to continue to help rid the forest floor of
English ivy and control the spread of Herb Robert, commonly referred to as "Stinky Bob,”from park roadsides and trails.
Volunteers will be instructed in techniques for removing non-native, invasive plants while protecting the native plants of
the forest. Ridding the forest of invasive weeds is one of the main objectives of the Hendricks Park Forest Management
Plan. By removing the ivy and other invasive plants, the native species have a better opportunity to reproduce and flourish
in the forest. Over the course of the past two years, volunteers, contractors and park staff have cleared ivy from about 10
acres of the park's forest. Ata November 15 work party, several truck-loads of debris were removed, clearing a small,
new area of forest. Volunteers at Saturday's work party will do the follow-up removal essential for maintaining these newly
cleared areas.
Tools and equipment will be provided. Work clothes such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants, sturdy shoes or boots,
and rain gear are recommended. Interested volunteers are asked to meet at the F.M. Wilkins Shelter on Summit Avenue
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
December 11,2003
