LAIIIL_—_,AL—
September 24, 2003
CONTACT: Tony Jobanek, Leaf Program Coordinator, 682-4835
Therese Picado, Public Information Specialist, 682-4814
Eugene's Fall Leaf Program Begins November 3
When the leaves begin to fall, the City of Eugene's Public Works Department will be there to
help you. The leaf program, which has been available to Eugene citizens since the late 1960s,
begins November 3 and offers residents leaf pick-up and delivery services. Crews will collect leaves
in every Eugene neighborhood two times between November and January and will deliver leaves to
0 residents upon request as supplies and schedules allow.
The program was originally implemented to prevent street flooding caused by clogged
gutters and catch basins. The program now collects and recycles leaves by delivering them to
residents, the City's community gardens and community groups such as Food for Lane County.
Leaves that aren't delivered are recycled as compost material. None of the leaves collected by the
City are taken to public landfills. Residents are encouraged to reuse and recycle leaves as well.
Leaves can be used as mulch or compost material for home gardens or landscaped areas and can
I411. be recycled by placing them in your yard debris container or by taking them to a commercial recycler
such as Rexius or Lane Forest Products. If residents place leaves in the street for pickup, they are
asked to follow certain rules:
Don't block sidewalks, bicycle lanes or traffic lanes with leaf piles.
Pile leaves at least 15 feet from parked cars.
Keep leaves at least a foot from the curb to avoid clogging gutters and storm drains.
Make sure leaf piles are free of branches, pine needles and other yard debris.
Wait to put leaves in the street until the weekend prior to collection.
This year's leaf collection schedule runs from November 3 through January 16:
Nov 3 - Nov 7 North Eugene
Nov 10 - Nov 14 Central Eugene
Nov 17 - Nov 21 Southeast Eugene
Nov 24 - Dec 5 Southwest Eugene
Dec 8 - Dec 12 West Eugene
Dec 15 - Dec 19 North Eugene
Dec 22 - Dec 26 Central Eugene
NI Dec 29 - Jan 2 Southeast Eugene
Jan 5 - Jan 9 Southwest Eugene
Jan 12 - Jan 16 West Eugene
(More)
