Io/ 2) K V 4-L ,s,.
Gilk % %J / I<7 /JI
J •
  l _i
August 8, 2003
CONTACT: Robin Hostick, Park Planner, 682-4915
Emily Proudfoot, Project Manager, 682-6019
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NOTE TO EDITORS: PLEASE DISREGARD PREVIOUS FAX RELEASE
New Neighborhood Park Under Construction on Oakmont Way
A new, 5.5-acre neighborhood park is now under construction along Oakmont Way, just
across the street from the Oakway shopping center.
Funded by the Parks and Open Space bond measure passed by Eugene voters in 1998,
the new park will include a variety of fun and leisure activities to suit many different interests.
Surrounded by a buffer of restored native oak savannah prairie, the park will be an oasis of
green, with more than 150 new trees, plus large, open lawn areas and a series of unique, rolling
hills for play, picnicking and sunbathing.
A new playground will feature an interactive water fountain, sand play area, and modern
play equipment. Nearby, an informal basketball court will double as a place to hold
neighborhood events, surrounded by a berm for seating and additional privacy for the adjacent
homes. Paths will curve gently through the park, providing a key bicycle route and helping to
reconnect the neighborhood with new crosswalks to the Oakway Center, while a soft-surface
jogging/walking trail will take park users on a winding, quarter-mile loop through the meadows.
New park furniture, such as benches, trash cans, and a drinking fountain will top it all off.
The park design is based on input gathered by City of Eugene staff from neighbors at a
series of public workshops held in the winter and spring of 2002. Grant's Landscape Service is
the contractor on the $500,000 project, which is on schedule for completion in November.
# # #
Public Works•Administration•City of Eugene•858 Pearl Street•Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262• FAX: (541) 682-6826• www.ci.eugene.or.us
