The volunteers, who were part of a • <br /> group of several hundred youth participating in a Catholic Heart Work <br /> Camp, worked from 9:00 a.m, to 3:00 p.m. in 100 plus degree <br /> 'Ilk <br /> temperatures at the Whilamut Natural Area of Alton Baker Park, the <br /> west Eugene wetlands, Alton Baker Park boat launch, and the Native <br /> Plant Nursery run by Stream Team volunteers. II ilt(c <br /> During their lunch break, the group participated in facilitated dialogue <br /> with Stream Team staff and volunteers. Stream Team Coordinator - <br /> Lorna Baldwin says that the experience seemed to have sparked an • . . • <br /> interest in environmental issues among the youth on her crew. "They - - <br /> began to show an understanding about the interdependence between people and the environment and how critical <br /> environmental sustainability is to everyone on the planet." Baldwin recalls one student summing up Stream Team's core <br /> mission by expressing how he gained a deeper appreciation for nature and the effect of his actions on water quality and <br /> the community in which he lives. <br /> The Catholic youth program brings young people together to work on community service projects. All participants pay for <br /> the trip and spend four days working on a variety of community service projects. They are also treated to one day of <br /> sightseeing and enjoying the company of their hosts. In honor of their visit, and to celebrate 25 years of friendship as sister cities, a dinner <br /> will be held at the Hilyard Community Center on Sunday, August 24, 2003, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. General admission <br /> tickets to the dinner are $15.00 ($7.00 each for committee members) and the meal will include the main course and <br /> beverage. The Willow Corner site is located <br /> immediately adjacent to The Nature Conservancy's 440-acre Willow Creek Natural <br /> Area and offers an outstanding opportunity to expand and enhance rare habitat for <br /> native plant and animal communities. One goal of the restoration project is to <br /> expand the existing populations of two species listed on the federal Endangered <br /> Species list -- Kincaid's Lupine and Fender's Blue Butterfly -- that now exist at the , • <br /> Willow Creek Natural Area. -+ <br /> The Willow Corner site is currently covered by fill material that was placed on the <br /> site in the 1970s and '80s.
