Sponsored by the Friends of
Hendricks Park, the free, public lecture is part of an educational series this spring and summer. Gleason participated in
the development of the Hendricks Park Forest Management Plan, a comprehensive plan that outlines strategies for
preserving and enhancing the Hendricks Park forest. He is also the author of Birds! From the Inside Out.
The final lecture in the series, delivered by Alan Dickman on September 15, will be about forest ecology. All events are
free and open to the public.
The purpose of the Friends of Hendricks Park is to raise awareness about Hendricks Park as a valuable community and
regional resource, provide stewardship in the management of the park by assisting with the implementation of the
Hendricks Park Forest Management Plan, educate the public about issues that affect the park, and generate a broad
base of community support for the park. For more information about the lecture series or the Friends of Hendricks Park,
call 607-4066 or Hendricks Park Head Gardener Michael Robert at 682-5324 or visit www.friendsofhendrickspark.orq.
Wetlands Crews "Cook"Invasive Weeds
The Parks and Open Space Natural Resource Maintenance
crew is covering more than one-and-a-half acres of wetlands
in the West Eugene Wetlands with plastic sheeting this
summer in an effort to more effectively eradicate pervasive,
non-native wetland weeds, such as reed canarygrass, and to
restore species native to this wet prairie habitat. The clear
plastic covering is the final step in the innovative, non-toxic,
weed control technique called solarization. Solarization is
one of many techniques used by parks crews to control highlyV
invasive weeds in Eugene's parks and natural areas.
Each June, the solarization process begins by mowing the
jrass and weeds, which can grow up to five feet tall. Crews 1 -
then till the ground to loosen aggressive root masses and
otherwise disrupt the root system of the weeds. A small
tractor with wide rubber tracks allows the soil to be turned
with minimal damage to the native plant community
surrounding the weed population.
Once the area is covered with plastic, the heat from the sun literally "cooks"the weeds. "Soil temperatures under the
covered area can get above 150 degrees and will kill seeds, roots and vegetation matter," says natural resource
maintenance specialist Jesse Cary-Hobbs.
The ground remains covered through September, when it is reseeded with native wetland plants. Many of the native
plants selected for reseeding are aggressive in nature and can out-compete the non-native weeds, like reed canarygrass,
if they try to regenerate. For more information, call Cary-Hobbs in Parks and Open Space at 682-4843.
THIS WEEK
07/10 Th 5:30pm BB, JS Police Commission McNutt Room
NEXT WEEK
07/14 M 5:30pm All Council Dinner Work Session McNutt Room
ABSENT: Nathanson, Torrey
07/14 M 7:30pm All Council Meeting Council Chamber
ABSENT: Nathanson, Torrey
)7/15 T 6:00pm DK Human Rights Commission McNutt Room
PAGE 2
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
