congestion and confusion at the airport entrance, and increasing the amount of curbside parking in front of the terminal
for dropping off and picking up passengers. The $435,000 airport project is funded primarily by the Federal Aviation
Administration.
4p. Nastewater system rehabilitation is ongoing at several locations, including Patterson Street between 18th and 24th
avenues, Hilyard between 19th and 20th avenues, East 19th from University to Hilyard, Bertelsen at West 11th Avenue,
Cal Young Road between Debrick and Happy Lane. Additionally, a project to improve the wastewater system in the
Valley River Center area is scheduled to begin on August 11. The wastewater projects are funded primarily by a
combination of wastewater user fees and wastewater systems development charges.
A stream enhancement project will begin next week on Tugman Creek. The project is designed to realign and add
meanders to the existing channeled stream through the westernmost portion of Tugman Park near 36th Avenue and
Hilyard Street. The lengthened stream will reduce flooding and extend seasonal use of the open play field in the park.
Stream banks will be stabilized with native vegetation to improve water quality and natural habitat in the stream corridor.
The project had been scheduled to be completed last fall but was delayed because of weather.
Elsewhere around town, work continues on neighborhood traffic calming improvements in the vicinity of Polk Street and
24th Avenue, and railroad crossing upgrades continue, with the next scheduled area at Jefferson Street set to begin the
week of August 11. Each of the projects is providing specific notice to affected residents and businesses, and road
reports are available to the general public through the City's"traffic relief' hotline and web service. For more information
about the various projects, contact City Engineer Mark Schoening at 682-5291.
Stream Team Volunteers Help Grow a Forest at Sheldon High School
Sheldon High School now has a small forest on its
campus, thanks to the contributions of the Eugene
Stream Team. According to campus supervisor Darin ;,
Henry, the Native Plant Bio Lab, which is endearingly ~a ,. '•
referred to as"Sheldon's Small Forest," is attracting ti• " ; .;_- —•-. - • 4 'K,,, ,
more and more students and others to learn about and „ .,,.. "It is - __
ionderful to see students develop a love and
appreciation for that which sustains us all. The
experience is new to many, and students talk of a - / . ,T
calming feeling they get when they are tending to `their' i-
40 small forest."
Henry attributes the success of the project to the Stream
Team. When Henry contacted Stream Team
Coordinator Lorna Baldwin, Baldwin jumped into action by providing tools and counsel in cultivating native plants and
recruiting enough volunteers for five work parties and involving approximately 30 to 35 people over the course of the
project. "Retirees, college students and others from the community joined Sheldon High School students to plant native
plants on campus," says Baldwin.
Henry recalls one incident when the project was stalled waiting for a donation of wood chips. He called Baldwin and a
crew from the Parks and Open Space Division came through with a delivery of wood chips that day. Henry captured the
essence of Stream Team's mission—to educate about and improve water quality and wildlife habitat in the city's
waterways and natural areas—with this quote: "Beyond your innovative works and obvious contributions to education, the
Willamette River will be a little cleaner now that our local runoff is being filtered naturally as it passes through our
campus." For more information, contact Lorna Baldwin at Parks and Open Space at 682-4850.
THIS WEEK I
08/01 F 1:30pm BB,JS Police Commission Process Session Hilyard Community Center
I NEXT WEEK I
)8/11 M 5:30pm All Council Dinner Work Session McNutt Room
08/11 M 7:30pm All Council Meeting Council Chamber
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2
