ANNUAL INSPECTION
AMAZON CREEK CHANNEL IMPROVEMENT
PROJECT NO. 15-01
22 AUGUST 1994
1. DATE OF INSPECTION: 18 August 1994
•
2. REFERENCE: LEVEE ENCROACHMENT STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES,
PDR 1130-2-5, 17 March 1980
3. SPONSOR: City of Eugene
4. INSPECTION PARTICIPANTS:
John Todd, Inspector, CENPP-PE-DC, (503) 326-6491
Richard Zucker, Maintenance Supervisor, (503) 687-5271
Ruth Koenig, City of Eugene, Environmental Volunteer Program
Brian Elliott, City of Eugene, Maintenance Planning
5. FINDINGS: The following inspection findings were noted:
a. Clearing of unwanted vegetation from the channel (lined
and unlined) and channel side slopes was noted at various sections
of the project. The City is continuing to conduct clearing
operations from the channel as an ongoing process. The City is
also working with environmental advocates to limit vegetation
removal to only that which is necessary to ensure the channel
capacity is not limited and unwanted vegetation will not result in
backwater. Selective mowing in the channel is recommended between
29th and 33rd Avenues to ensure adequate velocities during times of
high flow.
b. Sediment deposition noted upstream and downstream of
bridges located at 24th, 29th, 30th, 31st, and 33rd Avenues has
been removed. Slide areas noted at various locations have been
repaired. Removal of berry vines from the right bank of the
channel side slope in the vicinity of the fairgrounds was ongoing
at the time of the inspection. These findings were noted in the
1993 inspection report.
c. Berry vines were noted on the right bank of the channel
side slope downstream of the fairgrounds and extending to Polk
Street .(approx. 1,000 feet in length) . The vines restrict
inspectw_ of the channel and create habitat for burrowing animals.
d. Minor ruts (2-3 inches deep) were noted on the right bank
access road between Danebo and Terry streets (approximately 1, 000
feet) . Gravel surfacing should be placed on the road to allow
adequate access for construction equipment during maintenance
operations and during times of flooding.
I
