natural habitat, and in long stretches it's a visual wasteland (no shrubs or trees or wildflowers- pretty much a
barren appearance). The Amazon Corridor can be so much more, and I'm sure this is part of your vision also.
Briefly, my hope is that with realignment and meanders we gain patches of open space suitable, and developed,
for small picnic, play, and/or sitting areas, particularly in the area from City View on the east and somewhere
west of Bertelsen.
I have spoken with the neighborhood association several times about the concept. Looking for increased interest
and potential public/private partnerships (seems like money is always we reason we can't do as much as we'd
like) I talked with a couple of business owners who indicate interest in participating in the development of the
area, particularly because the canal and the path could be an asset and enjoyed by employees. I've described
my ideas to the geotech engineers who did the prelim. work a couple years ago, and with a few people involved
with FrESH and other park and open space advocates, and included this topic it in my talk at the Earth Day
Conference in 1993. I have received no negative responses, and I am enthusiastic to continue pressing along
these lines.
Additionally, the following idea is something I have suggested a few times, originally in my role as Planning
Commissioner and subsequently as a Council member: an overlay zone, to raise awareness and development
and maintenance standards along this valuable community asset (as you are aware, it's treated as an alley, a
backyard ditch, as it traverses some of the west eugene commercial and indusrial area).
Please call me so that we can arrange a time to meet. I'd like you to help me understand where we are in the
planning process, whether my ideas are already being moved toward implementation, and if they aren't already
in the works how they can be incorporated or forwarded for review.
thanks, Nancy N.
Page 2
