ANNUAL INSPECTION
AMAZON CREEK CHANNEL IMPROVEMENT
PROJECT NO. 15-01
28 AUGUST 2002
1 . DATE OF INSPECTION: 14 August 2002
2 . REFERENCE: LEVEE ENCROACHMENT STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES,
PDR 1130-2-5, 17 March 1980
3 . SPONSOR: City of Eugene
4 . INSPECTION PARTICIPANTS :
Richard Zucker, Maintenance Crew Supervisor, (541) 682-4833
Trevor Taylor, Natural Resources, Operations Coordinator
John Todd, Inspector, CENWP-EC-DC, (503) 808-4915
5 . FINDINGS : The following inspection findings were noted:
a . The City is continuing to work with environmental
advocates to limit vegetation removal to only that which is
necessary to ensure the channel capacity is not limited and
unwanted vegetation will not result in backwater. Selective
brush and tree removal is recommended in the channel between 30th
Avenue and 33rd Avenue; upstream of 29th Avenue; and along the
Fairgrounds, to ensure adequate velocities during times of high
flow.
b. Sloughing along the channel side slope was noted on the
left bank immediately downstream of Garfield Street (4 areas on
the left bank, each approximately 40 lineal feet) . Repair of
these areas are scheduled for later this year or next year. An
A/E firm prepared a report for the city that indicates the
channel bottom in the vicinity of Garfield Ave has dropped
approximately 4 feet . Computer modeling by the A/E indicates
that the banks fail due to bank storage of water during and after
high-discharge events .
c. Between Acorn Park Street and Oak Patch Road, the city
has constructed the Amazon Creek Widening Project . The project
has widened Amazon Creek along this stretch and returned the
creek to a more natural condition.
