PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE DIVISION
1820 ROOSEVELT BLVD. EUGENE,OREGON 97402 (503)687-5220
9
City of
EUGENE
November 30, 1988
D. Leslie Miller, P.E.
Chief, Emergency Management Branch
Portland district Corps of Engineers
P.O. Box 2946
Portland, Or 97208-2946
ATTN: Operations Division (CENPP-OP-E)
Dear Mr. Miller,
Thank you for your written summary, dated November 7, 1988, of the Amazon Creek
inspection by John Todd. We plan to address the noted deficiencies as follows:
a. A maintenance and inspection schedule is being developed and enacted to
ensure that the gates are properly maintained. This will also ensure that
the outlets are free and clear of obstructions. We have been replacing
the old wooden tops of the outflow structures with new metal tops. This
allows us easier access to perform maintenance.
We have been aware that more intense maintenance of the structures was
necessary. As our channel resources and budget are limited, we have
chosen to concentrate our efforts towards maintaining the channel as close
to design flow as possible.
b. The lined section of the Amazon Channel was cleaned during the summer of
1988. This included not only the bottom of the channel but all vegetation
growing along the sides of the concrete walls. A work order has been
written to remove the trees along the channel west of Fir Butte. This was
not completed during the summer of 1988. It is re-scheduled and should be
completed by the summer of 1989.
c. The slide area west of Fir Butte at station 50+00 is being monitored by
our Engineering division. It seems to have stabilized so their analysis
was that it was better left alone. Should it begin moving again they will
design and contract for necessary repairs.
d. Gates along various sections of the channel will be installed. This
should reduce the amount of rutting caused by 4 wheel drives. Funds will
be budgeted for improvement of the levee crown. Our intention is to have
0 tgat`done during the summer of 1989.
0
