Date: 11/04/91
From: Bob Hammitt CEWMJRH - RIS1
To: John Etter CERMJFE - RIS1
cc: Les Lyle CEWELAL - RIS1
Gene Shutt CEWMEGS - RIS1
Dave Ritter CEWMDPR - RIS1
Subject: Amazon Channel
Dave and I looked at the Amazon Channel south of the Hilyard crossing. With
brush cutting it would likely function fine until the summer of 94. At that
time the section between Hilyard and Fox Hollow needs major resloping. We
have intentionally left the banks too steep trying to save as many trees as
possible. This has contributed to major sloughing and erosion.
I believe this section would be a prime candidate for use of contract channel
cleaning funds. In fact we should consider moving at least the design phase
into the current year as we carried about $40,000 foward from last year. If
there is enough funds we could go ahead this summer. At least if we get design
work done we could locate jogging trail and any other facilities properly.
A section of this channel is very close to a sanitary sewer trunk and may
need to be moved east to accomodate a different slope. Getting the design
completed would also provide us with other info such as tree replanting
locations and yards of material available for use to accomplish other projects.
Brush cutting should keep the channel operational until the summer of 94.
However, as funds are available for design work I would recommend that Enginerr
ing Div work with Parks and Maintenance to complete the design. Depending on
estimated project costs verses funds available we might consider moving the
project ahead.
I
