Date: 09/16/92
From: Randy MacDonald CEEXRXM - RIS1
To: Les Lyle CEWELAL - RIS1
Gene Shutt CEWMEGS - RIS1
Sandra Gleason CEWASLG - RIS1
cc: Chris Andersen CEWACFA - RIS1
Subject: Amazon Channel Cleaning
Gene - Thanks for the analysis and summary of options related to the Amazon
cleaning proposed for 24th and Amazon. It was very helpful . I'm sorry I did
not learn of the Monday meeting until after it was over. I had not checked my
OA as I was away at an LOC conference the last half of last week.
By the way, Sandra and Les, if you don't hear from me on e-mail , give my staff
a call at 346-5020, and they will get messages to me or schedule meetings for
me. My life is real hectic right now, so I need the follow-up. Thanks.
I discussed the options re:Amazon cleaning with the Upper Amazon Steering
Committee at our recent meeting. We would like to get together with Public
Works staff (Gene, Les, others) and discuss the feasability of a volunteer
effort to help mitigate the impact while addressing the sediment and other
water capacity concerns. We believe that myself, Barbara Keller, and Steve
Lawn from the steering committee should participate, and also suggest that
Sharon Teague and a representative from FRESH/Audobon Society (Art Farley?)
should also be involved. I think that this citizen/staff discussion can lay
the groundwork for a positive, cooperative effort to address this issue.
One basic piece of information we will need for that meeting is:Approximately
how much sediment are we talking about (cu. yards, etc. ) removing? We need
to assess whether a volunteer effort is achievable or not.
We need to move fairly quickly to beat the rainy season. For the three of us
on the steering committee, 9/22 at 4pm works best, 9/23 at 3:30pm is the 2nd
choice next week. Can I ask you to contact appropriate city staff, steering
committee members, and the other citizens proposed for the meeting to see if
we can get together on one of these two dates? Here's the phone numbers of
the following:
Randy MacDonald - 346-5020 (w) , 343-8137 (h)
Barbara Keller - 344-8052 (w&h)
Steve Lawn - 484-9484 (w) , 942-0528 (h)
Sharon Teague - 683-3663 (w&h)
Art Farley - 346-3414 (w) , 683-1186 (h)
Please let me know if this approach will or will not work. I will be going
to Salem with Dave Reinhard and Terry Smith on transportation business, so
you will have to leave a message for me. I 'll try to check in by car phone
in the afternoon. Thanks.
Also, Les, the Upper Amazon Steering Committee folks reminded me that they
have not seen the letter from you summarizing the CCI's discussion and di-
rection re:the Upper Amazon project. Did you develop that letter? Can you
send me a copy so I can distribute it to them? If you have already sent it
to me, it must have gotten buried in one of my many stacks of paper.
