September 25, 1992
TO: Councilor Randy McDonald
FROM: Gene Shutt, Public Works
SUBJECT: VOLUNTEER CLEAN-UP OF AMAZON
Since our meeting on the afternoon of the 23rd weather conditions have
changed substantially. I went out Thursday and looked at some of the sec-
tions of the Amazon from 24th to 46th. At the time of my visit the water
level covered the channel bottom at several locations. The water flow has
caused the channel bottom to become water logged and will temporarily prevent
us from dropping a crawler into the bottom of the channel as previously dis-
cussed. However , if the weather improves we may still be able to do the
work we talked about later this fall . If so, prior to doing any work I'll
let you know exactly what we plan to do.
We also looked at the possibility of setting our excavating machine on 24th
and cleaning some of the channel from that work location. However, the lim-
ited reach of the machine and the small amount of work we would accomplish
isn't worth the risk of attempting to perform maintenance in that described
manner. Our best bet is to hope for good weather and set the excavating
machine on the east bank of the channel south of the concrete wingwalls and
load material pushed to a pick-up point by the crawler as we discussed at our
meeting.
The real reason for this note is to get back to you regarding the volunteer
clean-up effort planned for this weekend. You mentioned there is a possibil -
ity that some of the folks might do some vegetation removal north of Hilyard
and asked that we provide some direction as to the type of vegetation we
would like to see removed. My suggestion would be to concentrate on black-
berries and any cottonwood growth that exceeds 3/4 inch in diameter at the
base or is higher than eight feet tall . Obvious trees should be left in
place. However if a chainsaw is being used there is a log in the channel at
about the 4600 block that should be bucked up and removed so it doesn't float
downstream during a heavy rainfall and create problems at one of our street
crossings. Additionally, if enough people show up and there is plenty of
labor available, there is a beaver dam about 200 feet south of the foot
bridge within the Krueger area that should be removed. If these latter two
problems cannot be taken care of with volunteer labor we will need to have
our maintenance staff take care of them before heavy rains set in.
4 Good luck on the volunteer effort.
cc: Chris Andersen
Bob Hammitt
0
4
