Public Notice
US Army Corps Public Notice Number: 297/1
of Engineers
Portland District Contact: Matt Rea
Phone: 503-326-6095
Date: October 28, 1992
Public Notification of Corps of Engineers Amazon Creek Wetlands Study
Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has initiated a reconnaissance
study of the Amazon Creek flood control project to identify opportunities to make the
project more environmentally sensitive.
The Corps is investigating possible alternatives to restore wetlands, such as
widening channels, altering stream bank slopes and existing levees, and re-establishing
meanders. The reconnaissance study team will also look at options, such as restoring
historic wetlands and wildlife habitat, restoring rare plant populations, and providing new
recreational opportunities. Opportunities for reducing flood damages and improving
water quality will also be investigated.
The study team is currently collecting and analyzing available data concerning
water resource concerns in the Amazon Creek basin. Alternative options will be
developed and evaluated to determine which best meet the requirements of the project.
A reconnaissance report outlining the study's findings is expected to be released in about
a year.
Federal, State and local agencies and other interested groups and individuals are
invited to notify Portland District of impacts and issues that should be addressed in the
study. Also, the District is interested in identifying studies that may be relevant to the
Amazon Creek study, and any environmental reviews or consultations that may be
required. Please provide your input by Nov. 30, 1992, so your concerns can be
considered during the study.
.
Amareek Basin is located in the Long Tom River Subbasin of the
Willamette River Basin of western Oregon (see enclosed study area map). It has 62
(more)
