ANNUAL INSPECTION
AMAZON CREEK CHANNEL IMPROVEMENT
PROJECT NO. 15-01
10 SEPTEMBER 1992
1. DATE OF INSPECTION: 27 August 1992
2. REFERENCE: LEVEE ENCROACHMENT STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES,
PDR 1130-2-5, 17 March 1980
3. SPONSOR: City of Eugene
4. INSPECTION PARTICIPANTS:
John Todd, Inspector, CENPP-PE-DC, (503) 326-6491
Richard Zucker, Maintenance Supervisor, (503) 687-5271
Jack Long, Environmental Technician, (503) 687-5207
5. FINDINGS: The following inspection findings were noted:
a. Clearing of vegetation from the channel (lined and
unlined) and channel side slopes was noted at various sections of
the project. Areas of tree and brush removal and where the channel
side slopes were graded were also noted. The City is continuing to
conduct channel clearing operations as an ongoing process. Repairs
to the channel side slopes were noted on the left bank near Amazon
Parkway and Hillard Street and on the left bank downstream of
Danebo Avenue. Repairs (placement of gravel) were also noted on
the access roads between Bertelsen Road and Royal Avenue. The
Bureau of Land Management has removed two large cottonwood trees
located on the right bank between Danebo Avenue and Beltline Road.
The two large cottonwoods were noted in the 1991 inspection report.
b. Berry vines were noted on the right bank of the channel
side slope between Jefferson Street Bridge and Polk Street (approx.
2500 feet in length) . The vines restrict inspection of the channel
and create habitat for burrowing animals. This finding was noted
in the 1991 inspection report.
c. Slide areas were noted on the left bank of the channel
downstream of Richardson Street (approx. 75 feet in length) and on
the right and left banks of the channel immediately downstream of
Bailey Hill- Road (approx. 325 feet in length) . The slide
downstream of Richardson Street was repaired by the City, but
repair fa ed apparently from runoff from a nearby apartment
complex. The slide areas are scheduled to be repaired as part of
an overall bank repair project the City is planning this fall.
