I talked to Kaye about how to let Council
know about this. He strongly suggested it be in the newsletter. Thanks, Linda
From: Norris, Linda
To: Stewart, Vicki
Subject: West University Park- Council Newsletter
Date: Friday, January 28, 1994 2:48PM
Vicki, here is the article for the Council Newsletter:
WEST UNIVERSITY PARK
West University Park is a pocket park on 14th Avenue, between Hilyard and Patterson streets. The park is
located in a neighborhood with a large transient population. Over time, the park has become a sanctuary for
illegal activities, including drug transactions, alcohol violations, assaults, dogs at large, urinating/defecating, etc.
In the months of July and August, 1993, 90 arrests/citations occurred in the park. As a result of these activities,
neighbors no longer use the park. In addition, the overgrown vegetation at the park makes it very difficult for
Police Officers to check the park. Both the University Neighbors Executive Board and the University Small
Business Association have requested the removal of the picnic shelter, overgrown vegetation and covered area
on the west side of the park. As a result of these requests, Public Safety and Parks staff will hold a public
meeting on February 10, 1994 at 7:30 pm at 1458 Ferry Street to discuss security problems and possible
solutions for this park. We are asking for input from neighbors and other interested parties before deciding on a
course of action. If the course chosen is to remove the shelter and some of the vegetation, we will attempt to
use the plant material in other parks, and to salvage the picnic shelter. This is necessary because the park was
purchased and developed with CDBG funds. Staff working on this issue include representatives from
Community Policing, Recreation and Parks Maintenance.
