Lre '41110
MEMORANDUM
DATE: MAY 28, 1993
TO: JIM JOHNSON
FROM: BOB HAMMITT
SUBJECT: WAYNE MORSE RANCH PROJECT
I checked with staff (Dick Morgan, John Etter) about the Wayne Morse Histori-
cal Corporation proposed project utilizing Looking Glass students. We gener-
ally support the project and think it would be a benefit to the facility if
managed properly. Projects such as restoration of fences, improved landscap-
ing , painting and chipping of trails in the wooded area would certainly
benefit the property. Several things to flag are:
1 . The project needs to be managed in a way as not to conflict with Recrea-
tion Division's annual day camp.
2. The Off-Leash Association is planning some similar projects such as chip-
ping trails in the off-leash area and white-washing of the fence.
3. The Native Plant Society has made an agreement with us to do some im-
provements to the landscaping in exchange for some rental fees, so they have
a landscaping project planned.
As you probably recall , in the letter you received last spring from Charles
Porter, he suggested some painting and fence improvement projects. When we
responded to that letter, we told him that the City would be willing to par-
ticipate in the projects by possibly purchasing some of the materials. We
are still willing to do that.
The problem with the project will be the staff time that is required to work
with the Looking Glass students to coordinate the projects and insure that
they are properly done. We will be willing to assign somebody to work with
whoever they have supervising the students, but cannot provide supervision
for them. Assuming we proceed with the project, all of the proposals for
work by the Wayne Morse Historical Corporation need to be run by us for ap-
proval prior to authorization. Generally, we support the project and would
like to see it go forth. As it proceeds, whoever is coordinating it needs to
work with Dick Morgan.
I hope this info is helpful . If you need additional info give me a call .
