HAMMITT Bob
From: MEDLIN Johnny R
To: HAMMITT Bob
Cc: ETTER John F; RHAY Tim W
Subject: FW: West Butte
Date: Wednesday, May 13, 1998 11:36AM
Hi Bob,
Please note John Etter's comments below.
Some additional thoughts. The current plan for the lot is for the contractor to grade to "as good as or better"than it
was prior and then to seed with grass. We plan no irrigation and feel the most inexpensive maintenance is to
rough mow 2-3 times a year. The grass would be green in spring to early summer and brown in late summer to
fall. Regarding wild flowers, there is greater maintenance costs in getting wild flowers to establish and hold than to
rough mow. You may want Tim to give figures.
Another thought on any proposal for use for the land outside of park purposes is that I know Federal Monies have
been used in Skinners Park in the past. We could have an issue with the FEDs regarding repayment of funds or
mitigation of acreage lost if we allow other non-park use. John Etter would need have conversation with the FEDs
and clarify their position on this prior to any ideas moving too far forward.
Regarding trees. If the property owners close by wanted to plant trees we could provide them through the
NeighborWoods program. Three years of summer watering would need be provided but I suspect that could be
worked out. We would need plant them in the planter strip between the sidewalk and the curb due to funding
source being road fund. While this could result in a long term solution it would also likely be 30 years before the
trees could grow sufficiently so they had much effect. People plant trees in their own yards to share specific
windows of their homes impacted would make for a much quicker solution.
In John's note below he quoted for the total sidewalk need in Sladden. , If you only consider the east side you
could drop the footage to approximately 400 @ $5.00 per square foot with an approximate project cost of
$12,000.
Please let me know if you need additional.
Thanks
Johnny
From: ETTER John F
To: MEDLIN Johnny R
Subject: FW: West Butte
Date: Tuesday, May 12, 1998 5:05PM
Here are my "West Butte" comments. --John
From: ETTER, John F
To: MEDLIN; Johnny R
Subject: FW: West Butte
Date: Monday, May 11, 1998 11:01AM
Some comments about what is discussed below:
1. The West Butte park block north of Cheshire--This is an important area, both as an entrance to and exit from
the park, and as a location to expand park amenities. A year or so ago I was in a meeting with Scott and staff as
we talked about the potential for housing south of the park. I offered that there could be a plan that would yield
some of the park for housing, and it would take the form of Washington Street curving eastward, then
southeastward, and then connecting with Cheshire. The result would be to take park traffic out of the middle of
that West Butte residential area and improve it as a place to live. For park users it would simplify the entry to the
park (and make for easier instructions on getting to the park).
2. The Park and Open Space package to go before the voters includes installing softball field, perhaps with a
Page 1
