MEMORANDUM
Date: August 26, 1993
From: Dick Morgan
To: Bob Hammitt
Subject: Sheldon High School Ballfield
Enclosed is a brief history of the City of Eugene's involvement in the maintenance of the
Sheldon High School baseball field. I have spoken with both Doug Post and Louie Kroeck to
pull together as much information that is available!
Prior to 1968-The City crews maintained the Sheldon Ballfield grounds for Kidsports
(E.B.A.A.) games during the summer months.
1965 - Lane County Baseball Association volunteers begin the process to have lights
installed at Sheldon Baseball Field. (See attached 12 point program dated
February 22, 1965).
1968 - Ballfield lighting installed at Sheldon High School by volunteers. The City
begins paying the electrical bill and maintaining the lighting system.
1969 - A revised 12 point program for lighting, use and maintenance of Sheldon
Ballfield Diamond is developed. (See attached program dated November 14,
1969). We have been unable to find a signed copy of the agreement.
1980 - The City discontinues providing ballfield maintenance to School District 4-J
ballfields including Sheldon High School ballfield. The City continues to
maintain the Sheldon ballfield lighting system and pay the electrical bills.
1982 - Sheldon Ballfield is retrofitted with metal-halide lighting through a Bonneville
Power Administration program. Because of the change over the existing pole
transformers and central switching transformer tower are no longer necessary.
Louie recommended the removal of the transformers, overhead wiring, and
switching tower for safety and further energy reduction. This was not done
due to lack of budget.
. A
1987 - Sheldon Ballfield transformers are tested for presence of PCB's. Results were
that the minor amount of PCB's present represented no hazard according to
EPA standard in effect at the time. Test results are on file at Parks Planning.
