Hammitt, Bob
From: Medlin, Johnny
To: Post, Doug; Etter, John; Morgan, Dick; Hammitt, Bob
Cc: Johnson, Jim; Andersen, Chris
Subject: RE: Fire Station Site south of Sheldon Center
Date: Wednesday, March 23, 1994 7:28AM
John, I agree this can be placed on the table as a possible option for whoever is looking at this issue, however
your section's workload leads me to feel we shouldn't spend any Parks Planning staff time on this unless we get a
formal request for evaluation through channels. Thanks Johnny
From: Etter, John
To: Post, Doug; Morgan, Dick; Hammitt, Bob; Medlin, Johnny
Cc: Johnson, Jim; Andersen, Chris
Subject: Fire Station Site south of Sheldon Center
Date: Monday, March 14, 1994 11:20AM
Other city staff concerned with a Willakenzie Area fire
station location called me concerning the availability of some
ground south of Sheldon Center on the curve of Willakenzie
Road. After giving this some thought I've decided to
recommend support for the concept. The thinking goes like
this:
The area south of the center is not large enough to
accommodate another athletic field. Those of us who have been
park planners over the years saw the main value in this space
as off street parking to accommodate those coming to athletic
events that take place on the 4-J fields (e.g., Kidsports
games). It also has value as open space. The channel, once
planned for being put in a culvert as it is heading east, now
must remain open and becomes a design element in any
development plan.
The only recreational item that comes to mind which would fit
in a smaller area is another skateboard facility. The
Skateboard Plan spoke of eventually having several facilities
• around Eugene; the Sheldon area is a logical location.
Skateboard facilities and firestations have a common NIMBY
characteristic. This site is backyard free until you get to
some apartments about 500 feet south. In several days I will
skectch a possible layout about how the area could develop
which I will share with any of you who ask to see a copy. If
you have any input for what should or should not be in that
sketch, an immediate (48 hr) response would be appreciated.
The concept for the fire station design involves a
pull-thru-from-the-back; no backing in off of Willakenzie. To
access the ban-side they would have to utilize the alignment
of the parking expansion. If the compensation for siting the
fire station on park land (not having to buy a new site and
face the NIMBY syndrome) was that some site improvements were
made to the park (part of the 2nd phase parking expansion)
Page 1
