Senior volunteers will not enter a home or garage, and will only go into the fenced back yard if given prior permission.
Sorry, the volunteers will not pick up mail or newspapers, nor will they feed pets. To take advantage of this great new
Students Encounter Wildlife—Including Smoker the Bear—at Hendricks Park
Earlier this month, Hendricks Park staff and members of the education committee of the Friends of Hendricks Park spent
the day at the park with 25 second graders from Mt. Vernon School in Springfield. Smokey the Bear and other
representatives from the U.S. Forest Service made an appearance and spoke to the children about fire prevention. The
program is part of a new educational effort aimed at teaching young people about forest ecology, plant identification and
environmental stewardship at Hendricks Park. This field trip followed an educational session with the children in their
classroom earlier this year.
While hiking in the forest and experiencing a nature "scavenger hunt", the children learned about native and invasive
plants and the many restoration projects in the park." It seems that they retained a considerable amount of knowledge
because, once back at the shelter eating lunch, the children performed quite well on the "pop quiz"the presenters gave.
"It was great," says Ginny Alfriend, park gardener and one of the program leaders. "The students seemed to really enjoy
the field trip, and the teacher would like to come back with her class next year."
For more information about the program, contact Alfriend at Hendricks Park at 682-5324 or Friends of Hendricks Park at
Volunteers and Their Dogs "Bark"Their Way Through Work Party at Dog Park
Last Saturday, the City's Volunteers in Parks program and
about 25 volunteers and their dogs came out to the Alton
Baker Park dog park behind Autzen Stadium to roll up "1 A
their sleeves and spruce it up. With spring growth well
under way, it was hard work weeding the paths, fields and
entrance way, but these volunteers were cheered on by , 1.)dozens of enthusiastic dogs. The dogs kept up their
Y
barking encouragement until many of the gravel pathways -c t " -y-
were resurfaced, the front entry area was bark-o-mulched, + , --'""
and the park looked significantly better.
For the last year and a half, a group of key volunteers, all •
patrons of the dog park, have worked with City parks staff
to design, and since opening in August 2002, maintain the
dog park. The group has raised funds and organized
several work parties. Volunteers in Parks Coordinator
Chris Girard says the group has been instrumental in making the dog park a reality, identifying maintenance needs in the
park, and realizing many of the more innovative features in the park, such as a dog washdown station, dog waste bag
dispensers, and gathering places where dogs and their owners can socialize. "I think their ability to sustain their efforts
shows that dog parks are not only popular but a needed and community-supported resource," says Girard. For more
information, call Girard at Parks and Open Space at 682-4845.
Central Area Transportation Study Draft Update Out for Public Review
Public review of Eugene's Central Area Transportation Study (CATS) draft update is under way. CATS is being updated
to reflect current needs and priorities given the number of significant changes that have occurred in the study area since
the plan was last updated in 1993.
CATS encompasses the central Eugene area, including downtown, the University of Oregon campus, Sacred Heart
Medical Center, the Riverfront Research Park, the site of the new federal courthouse, and portions of the Fairmount,
Jefferson-Westside, and Friendly Area neighborhoods. The study area is generally bounded by Walnut Street on the
east, Jefferson Street on the west, 19th Avenue on the south, and the Willamette River and Third Avenue on the north.
The Eugene Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the draft CATS update at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, in
