The meeting
is scheduled for Monday, June 30, at 5:00 p.m. in the McNutt Room of City Hall. This is a meeting for everyone who is
interested in working on this effort.
At the last Two Rivers Interfaith Ministries meeting, faith leaders expressed the need to heal the divisions created by the
process for renaming Centennial Boulevard. Reverend Dan Bryant proposed that the Human Rights Commission work
with the NAACP and other racial justice allies, including Faith in Action, to organize a march on the new MLK Boulevard
on August 28, the 40th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech and the March on Washington. The HRC and the
NAACP gladly accepted the idea and offer for allies to collaborate on the event.
In a separate effort, Betty Snowden, who addressed the City Council on this matter, has contacted Yolanda King,
daughter of Dr. King, and has her tentative agreement to be in Eugene for an event on August 23rd. At this point, there
are no specific plans or details. Monday's meeting will be the initial planning meeting. It will serve as an opportunity to
share ideas. For more information, contact Greg Rikhoff at 682-5177 or via e-mail at greg.s.rikhoff@ci.eugene.or.us.
Sewer Repair Project to Start in Mid-July in Three South Eugene Neighborhoods
Work on a $2 million project to repair deteriorated wastewater lines in three separate areas of south and south-central
Eugene is scheduled to begin in mid-July and be completed by early November. The general construction areas are in
the 1800 to 2300 blocks of Patterson Street and east to University Street; the 2900 to 3700 blocks of Willamette Street
and west to Monroe Street; and the 2500 to 2800 blocks of Emerald, Onyx and Baker streets.
Much of the repair work will be done using trenchless methods, inserting a resin liner through the existing manhole and
into the existing underground sewer pipes. Traditional excavation methods are necessary to reconnect individual
properties and correct problems that can't be fixed with a liner. Insituform Technologies International of California is the
general contractor on the project. This project is being funded with revenues collected from monthly wastewater user
fees, with no assessment to the property owners.
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
