EUGENE/ r
x
May 5, 2003
CONTACT:
➢ John Clark, Turf and Grounds Supervisor, Parks and Open Space, 682-4826
➢ Therese Picado, Public Information Specialist, Parks and Open Space, 682-4814 or 682-
4800, therese.m.picado@ci.eugene.or.us
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPRING MOWING SCHEDULE CRITICAL IN CREATING HEALTHY TURF IN CITY PARKS
The City's Turf and Grounds crew are well into the annual spring mowing schedule in
Eugene's developed parks as they try to keep up with the unusually fast-growing grass this
year, and the frequency of mowing is only expected to increase as the growing season
intensifies. A systematic mowing schedule in the spring, rain or shine, is critical in establishing
healthy turf in the city's parks by preventing the grass from getting too tall and the clippings
from smothering the turf.
During the wet months of spring, crews use specialized mowers to prevent damage to
the turf from heavy, bulky equipment. They are smaller, more versatile and provide better
traction than the average mower. Though mud often pumps onto the grass while mowing in wet
conditions, giving the appearance that the mower is damaging the turf, the mud usually
disappears in a few days as the rain continues.
For more information, call 682-4826.
###
