The North ,' ''
Eugene High School students are getting valuable, hands-on construction and i,. }
business experience as they design and build three, 8'x 12'garden sheds with
sliding doors and a skid to make them easy to move. The sheds will replace, at '_ '
low-cost, the dilapidated garden sheds that were no longer large enough to
accommodate the needs of the resident gardeners at Whiteaker, River House
and Mathews community gardens.
Community Gardens Coordinator Chris Girard is enthusiastic about this cooperative venture between the Parks and
Open Space Division and a local area high school program. "We feel that this project not only gives young people the
opportunity to build valuable job skills but benefits Eugene's parks and open space system and the rest of the community
as well."
NEMCO has been in operation for 10 years and is co-coordinated by metalshop teacher Don Kuehling and woodshop
teacher John Piltz. The enterprise employs 25 students a year, producing wooden furniture and other wooden and metal
fabrications for area businesses. Students receive minimum wage earnings. Girard plans to utilize this local source of
manufacturing as the community gardens program grows. Since the Parks and Open Space Division assumed
management of the program last July,the program is in the process of planning two more community garden sites,with
an addition of 50 garden plots.
'egistration for community garden plots began in March. A limited number of plots are available at Whiteaker and
--Mathews community gardens. Please call 682-4800 to reserve a plot.
