Native plants provide a natural, regional look without sacrificing beauty and their
atural resistance to garden pests reduces the need for chemicals in the garden. Once established, these plants require
pass water and thrive with little fuss or care. Less chemical use and runoff from garden maintenance means cleaner
stormwater and healthier rivers and streams.
Copies of a new native plant poster have been placed in the Council Office. To see examples of native (locally adapted)
plants, stop by Booth #511 in Expo Hall 1. Staff will be on hand to answer questions. For more information, please call
Kathy Eva, Public Information Specialist for the Stormwater Management Program at 682-2739, or visit the Stormwater
Program's web site at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw.
Food Program To Re-open
FOOD for Lane County will start serving dinners on Monday, March 17, at"the dining room" in the former Govinda's
restaurant. The agency has been working with neighbors, other service agencies, volunteers, City and County staff, and
Eugene police in anticipation of the re-opening. The program will serve families with children and seniors. The facility will
offer a play area for the children, including a corner seat, books, tables and chairs, and a blackboard. Last Saturday, thirty
volunteers pitched in to thoroughly clean the facility and outside areas. FOOD for Lane County will be relying on
volunteers to assist with security and help create a warm and inviting atmosphere for families, particularly in the first few
weeks of operation. The Eugene Police Department will provide training videos for staff and volunteers on family violence,
appropriate behavior, and environmental security. Additional lighting will be installed in the parking lot. The agency will
also be meeting with the Downtown Neighbors in March to share information about the program. For more information,
contact Linda Dawson, Planning and Development Department, 682-5071 or email linda.l.dawson@ci.eugene.or.us.
Elementary School Students "Zoom into Engineering"
If you were given an egg, a nylon, a balloon, a piece of string, a stack of pennies, a ruler, a dowel, and two cups and told to
trop the egg from a ladder to within two inches of the ground but not break the egg, what would you do?
