The statewide award recognizes ETF's efforts to work with Stangeland and Associates, <br /> tenants; Jenova Land Company, owners; and City Urban Forestry and other Public Works staff to <br /> transform a bleak, concrete intersection at 3`d and Lawrence streets into a colorful urban oasis last <br /> year, as part of the organization's "Trees for Concrete" campaign. Jeff Lanza, local landscape <br /> architect and ETF board member, will accept the award at a luncheon ceremony beginning at 12:45 <br /> p.m. <br /> University of Oregon Landscape Architecture Department Chair Cynthia Girling and Eugene <br /> Urban Forester Mark Snyder are chairing the Oregon Community Trees conference, entitled <br /> "Designing the Future Urban Forest." Keynote speaker Gary Mason, from Oakland, California, will <br /> speak about ecosystem-based approaches to urban and community forestry. Ed Macie, Southern <br /> Region Urban and Community Forestry Coordinator for the U.S. Forest Service in Atlanta, Georgia, <br /> will join Snyder and Peter Gutowsky, planner from Salem, in a panel discussion about measuring tree <br /> canopy cover changes over time with satellite imagery. Macie will also discuss national perspectives <br /> on community forestry in his closing address. <br /> Morning sessions will focus on planning the future community forest in new development, <br /> while afternoon topics will highlight local efforts to retrofit existing urban areas to maximize tree <br /> canopy benefits. Snyder and Public Works Engineering Division staff will give a presentation on <br /> innovative approaches used recently in planning and building the Broadway Street Opening project. <br /> A walking tour of the site will take place after the conference. <br /> Oregon Community Trees is a non-profit organization that promotes healthy urban and <br /> community forests in Oregon through education, awareness and advocacy.
