Crews began experimenting with similar weed control units, including propane torch devices called "flamers," in the mid-
1990s and, within a few years, implemented this non-chemical approach into their standard integrated pest management
practices. The "flamer" units, though effective, do not allow the degree of control necessary to avoid damage to desired
plants in the vicinity.
"Though the feedback from staff is generally positive, the"eco weeders" are not a quick-fix for all weed control issues and
will remain part of an arsenal of weed control techniques parks staff use. The effectiveness of weed control is dependent
on the type of weed and the timing of the weed control application. The new system, for instance, does not work as well
on grasses and older, more established weeds. It also operates more slowly than other weed control systems and
requires more frequent applications for best results.
Although it will not entirely replace the need for chemically-based products,this system will reduce the amount of
herbicides used in Eugene's park system. For more information, call Turf and Grounds Supervisor John Clark at
682-4826 or Landscape Supervisor Kevin Foerstler at 682-4822.
THIS WEEK
'i,, . dh,,r ++! .u .:5,vJ^ x v,wW •d,+y r. ...0;9 o,uvN ' ,'•; tti + i;S.. <., ri'M4,L .. , .„ ,. ;'' :.. .'.
