blackberries and does not meet current safety standards, but planning has begun on creating a trail that will be safe,
accessible, unobtrusive, and environmentally sensitive. Construction work is expected to begin in 2004.
addition, the Natural Resources crew recently completed construction of a retaining wall on the Ridgeline Trail east of
ix Hollow Road. The retaining wall will help stabilize the trail bed. This project is a component of the State Recreational
Trails Program Grant that was awarded to the City in 2001. The retaining wall project is the third of seven projects to be
funded through the grant. Three of the remaining four projects involve the installation of a boardwalk to correct a trail
crossing through a seep, or small spring, on the Ridgeline Trail between Blanton Road and Willamette Street. That
project has been assigned to an Eagle Scout candidate and will begin in late January 2003. The final project is the
construction of the Headwaters Tie Trail, which will connect the Amazon Greenway at Martin Street in South Eugene to
the Ridgeline Trail at Fox Hollow Road. This project is in the planning process and is targeted to begin in fall 2003.
The crew also completed trail construction in the easement through the Son Blaze development on Moon Mountain. The
trail alignment and excavation were completed by the developer. Parks and Open Space staff worked with a Lane
County Youth Services crew to finish grading the trail, add gravel and install trail drainage features. Following the trail
construction, areas of exposed soil were planted with native blue wild rye, sword ferns, big leaf maple, choke cherry, and
ocean spray. The trail will be opened to the public as development progresses on the property. In the future, this
easement access trail will connect to Park and Open Space lands and a trail to the summit of Moon Mountain will be
created. Other interested community members are welcome to join the work party. The dog park is located
off of Leo Harris Parkway behind Autzen Stadium. Parking for the park is in Lot 8. Waterproof gear is recommended.
`ork will focus on minimizing the mud, a problem that has become exacerbated by the heavy rains of the season and
the heavy use the park has received since it opened this past August. Tasks will include placing gravel under the rain
shelter, completing a section of gravel path between the west entrance and the west wash-down station, opening up a
section of the east pasture that has been closed since October when it was re-seeded, and doing overall trail
maintenance.
"This park has received wonderful community support from the volunteer advisory group throughout the development
and now maintenance of the park," says Volunteers in Parks Coordinator Chris Girard. "They have truly been there for
the park."
