been made to date, resulted from continuing cooperation between the City and University that dates back many years. In
addition to providing inspections and encouraging the installation of sprinklers, the Fire Marshal's Office annually
conducts fire safety academies for fraternities and sororities. This year's academy is scheduled for February 8 at the
Emergency Services Center. For more information, please contact Deputy Fire Marshal Reggie Augsburger at 682-5420.
City Acquires 123 Acres for the Ridgeline Trail
On January 8, the City closed escrow on 123 acres of land near the intersection of Bailey Hill and Bertelsen roads. The
land was purchased with funds from the Parks and Open Space bond measure voters endorsed in 1998 and a donation
from the sellers.
The open space parcel includes a portion of the actual topographic ridgeline that runs to the south of Eugene, preserving
this scenic, forested skyline and offering views to the south and west. The property also extends the Ridgeline Trail
system, which has been predominantly focused in southeast Eugene, into the southwest part of the city. The site contains
potential trail access from Bailey Hill Road and ridgeline properties already purchased further to the south and west.
In addition to significantly expanding and preserving open space in Eugene, the acquisition will provide important
ecological benefits. The site includes some of the headwaters of The Nature Conservancy's Willow Creek wetlands,
which will allow for long term protection of this ecologically significant area. It also contains significant Oregon white oak
habitat, now an endangered habitat in the Willamette Valley.
Approximately 89 percent of the money earmarked for the Ridgeline Trail has been spent. However, due to several
donations and favorable sales, the property acquired has already surpassed the bond measure target of 232 acres. For
more information about this acquisition, contact Parks Planner Philip Richardson at 682-4906.
Transportation Study UnderWay with Neighbors in Crest Drive Area
Public Works Transportation staff has been meeting with a group of neighbors from the Crest Drive Neighborhood who
volunteered to assist in a transportation study that was forecast in the 1999 Eugene Arterial and Collector Street Plan
CSP). When the ACSP was adopted, classification of streets in this neighborhood was delayed, pending completion of
this study. Roadway surfaces in this area have continued to deteriorate, which spurred the need to initiate the study.
Four meetings have been held to date, preliminary classifications have been determined using the matrix in the ACSP,
and discussion has begun on developing alternative design standards with a focus on "context sensitive design" for
roadways in this area. No construction projects are being initiated by this process, but could only be proposed after
completion of the study. An open house is currently being planned for early February to share these discussions and
progress to date with a broader group of neighbors. Approximately 1,900 postcards will be sent out.
