WI
ialliWilillii
-aw iw arvi : ' M a!_ =i
EUGENE IIaril 'I '!NI/11111111 MI / M
MI 7
December 4, 2002
CONTACT: Richard Zucker, Leaf Program Coordinator, 682-4833, or Therese Picado, Public
Information Specialist, Parks and Open Space, 682-4814
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SECOND ROUND OF LEAF COLLECTION AND DELIVERY
BEGINS THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 9 TO 13
The second round of the City's leaf program begins the week of December 9-13. The
annual program, which has been available to Eugene citizens since the late 1960s, offers
residents leaf pick-up and delivery services.
The program was originally implemented to prevent street flooding and the clogging of
gutters, catch basins, and storm sewer lines. The program now collects and recycles leaves by
delivering them to residents, the City's community gardens, community groups such as Food for
Lane County, and commercial recyclers, who use them as mulch or compost. As of December
4, approximately 10,000 cubic yards of leaves have been collected. Although fewer leaves are
normally collected during the second round of collection, it is anticipated that approximately
18,000 cubic yards, or nearly 4,000 tons of leaves, will be collected this season. This is
consistent with the record volume of leaves that have been collected in the last few years.
Residents are asked to pile leaves in the street away from parked cars so that pick-up
vehicles can easily access the piles and at least a foot from the curb to avoid clogging storm
drains. Piles need to be free of other yard debris so that they can be delivered to people who
want leaves for their gardens. Leaf piles must not block bike or traffic lanes. Leaves should be
put in the street the weekend prior to collection. Leaves will be collected according to the
following schedule:
December 9-13 Central Eugene
December 16-20 Southeast Eugene
December 23-27 Southwest Eugene
December 30-January 3 West Eugene
January 6-10 North Eugene
To request a leaf delivery, mail, fax or deliver a request form to 1820 Roosevelt Blvd.,
Eugene, OR 97402 or 682-4882 (fax). Forms are available at any community center or the
library, or on the web at www.ci.eugene.or.us/PW/leaves.htm. For more information about the
leaf program, call the City's leaf hotline at 682-5383. For information about composting leaves,
call 682-5542. For leaf collection services outside the city limits, call Lane County Public Works
at 682-8565.
###
